Aster 16/20 CV tonneau by Renaudin & Besson 1904
2018 Nationale Oldtimerdag - Lelystad (NL)

The "Ateliers de Construction Mécanique l'Aster" from St. Denis, France was an important supplier of components to car manufacturers in the early days of the automobile. Particularly well known were the engines which Aster produced for a wide number of manufacturers, among them Ariès, Gladiator, Singer and Swift.. From 1900 till 1910 some complete cars were assembled from Aster components and sold under their own name.
Later the British branch of Aster marketed complete cars from 1922 till 1930.
This chain-driven car has a 2.7 liter 4-cylinder Aster engine placed in an Aster manufactured chassis. The brass radiator shell also shows the Aster brand name. Most other components were sourced elsewhere. It's body came from another car and was made by Renaudin & Besson from Paris, who were in business from 1911 till 1914.
All in all an unique example of a complete car by a well known engine manufacturer fitted with a later body by a short lived coach builder.

The ship visible alongside the car is called the Batavia and a reconstruction of a trading ship of the Dutch United East Indian Company built in 1628. In 1629 the original was shipwrecked off the coast of Western Australia.
