Maserati T151 Le Mans berlinetta Group P replica 1964
2015 Techno Classica - Essen (D)
In 1962 Maserati introduced a replacement for the successful line of "Birdcage" racing cars. It was a more conservative closed-cockpit design named the Tipo 151. Three were made for the Le Mans 24 hour race but they proved rather uncompetitive due to reliability issues. In 1964 the design of one of the Tipo 151 was updated and its 4 liter engine replaced by the 5 liter V8 unit from the Maserati 5000 GT. So the Tipo 152 (also referred to as the Tipo 151/3) was born.
The car was entered in 3 races during the 1964 season but did not finish any of them. During test runs for the 1965 Le Mans race the car had a fatal crash and was destroyed. Much later the remains of this car, chassis # 002, were used to create this unique, authorized replica.
