Glas S 1204 cabriolet 1964 fl3q
2018 Techno Classica - Essen (D)

German car manufacturer Glas probably will forever be associated with the production of the Goggomobil microcars but they did make other interesting cars. Like the 04-series, a range of compact lower middle class cars powered by modern 4-cylinder engines with overhead camshaft and a displacement of 1000 up to 1300 cc. These cars were made from 1962 till 1967 in reasonable numbers (just under 41,000 produced) but are nowadays nearly forgotten.
Still they were lively, even sporty cars although a bit delicate. The S models came as a slightly claustrophobic coupe and a cute cabriolet like the one shown here. For those really dedicated to performance there were even TS versions available with considerably more powerful engines. For comparison: this S 1204 with 1200 cc engine has 53 hp and a top speed of 140 kph; the TS version of that engine offered 70 hp and 160 kph. At the time reports suggested that the TS models were more at home on the track than on the open road. That's probably why you'll hardly ever see an original TS version of these cars.
But the regular 04 cabriolet is cute enough for me. Without the roof the angular, boxy lines of the car come close to a convincing design. It's charming and undeservedly obscure.
