Porsche 550 A 1500 RS Le Mans coupe replica 1956
2017 Antwerp Concours - Wijnegem (B)
For the 1956 Le Mans race Porsche produced 2 closed versions of their famous 550 A spyder model. The lines of these cars were rather similar to those of the 1953 Porsche 550 hardtop models, which had proved competitive in Le Mans earlier. Of the 2 cars only 1 finished, taking 5th place overall. This was the car with number 25, driven by Von Trips and Von Frankenberg.
None of the 550 A Le Mans coupes survived; one was scrapped after a crash and the other converted to a regular spyder. But the number 25 car was immortalized as a scale model car (by Italian manufacturer Brumm for instance). When Porsche introduced the new Cayman model decades later they saw the 550 A Le Mans coupe as its early ancestor and ordered a replica made after the original design, to be shown next to the Cayman.
It's not clear to me whether this replica is related to the one Porsche ordered but it does look very alike and it was nice to see it in real life after having had the model car for a long time.
