Italian Luigi Platé was a racing driver who later formed his own racing team, "Scuderia Platé", assisted by his nephew Enrico Platé. From the late 1930s up to the early 1950s they created a number of racing specials based on Alfa Romeo or Maserati components. The car shown here is constructed around a (modified) 1934 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 engine (including transmission and front axle), placed in a custom made tubular chassis and fitted with attractive aluminum bodywork.
There are a number of technical features present which are typical for Platé, like chassis tubes that acted as reservoirs and ducts for oil or water, hydraulic brakes with custom made brake shoes and semi-independent suspension. Possibly this is the only surviving Scuderia Platé car, saved from obscurity by an American who bought it in 1959. Scuderia Platé didn't enjoy many successes and ceased its activities in 1954 when Enrico died after being hit by a car during a race in Argentina.
