Brazilian sports car manufacturer Puma is best known for its rear engined aircooled Volkswagen powered models but the company started out with a continuation of the DKW powered Malzoni GT in 1967. Rino Malzoni created his polyester bodied car with Italian flair for competition on the racing track. It was based on the shortened floorpan of the locally produced VEMAG DKW and was powered by its 2-stroke 1000 cc 3-cylinder engine. Tuned for racing it could produce up to 116 hp and achieve a top speed of 190 kph. A small series of around 45 Malzoni GT cars was produced from 1964 till 1966. In 1966 the design was modified to adapt it for use as a normal road car and renamed to Puma GT.
Though well received the Puma GT was to be short lived. In 1967 the VEMAG DKW plant was acquired by Volkswagen and its DKW based products were phased out. The Puma DKW GT therefore was only built in 1967, and a small portion in 1968, with a total of around 125 cars sold. Again the car was redesigned, now to be based on Volkswagen components, which ultimately lead to the successful Puma GTE model in 1969.
The car shown here however is one of those rare front engined DKW powered models, still very close to the original Malzoni GT design and perhaps even better looking than the later Puma models.
