Rambler was one of the oldest American car manufacturers. Thomas Jeffery began producing cars under this brand name as early as 1897. In 1914 the Rambler name was replaced by Jeffery, until the company was sold to former General Motors president Charles Nash in 1916. This lead to the first Nash badged car (in fact still a Jeffery design) in 1917.
Decades later the Rambler name returned as a model name for the compact 1950 Nash Rambler. In 1957, after Nash had been merged into the American Motors Company (AMC), Rambler became the brand name again. This lasted up to 1983, with Mexico being the last country in which cars were manufactured under the Rambler name.
