Today nearly forgotten but once a proud manufacturer of top-of-the-line luxury cars: Locomobile. Starting with steam cars as early as 1899 and later gradually moving to powerful petrol engined cars. Perhaps best known was the Model 48, introduced in 1911 with a 6-cylinder engine which evolved to producing an impressive 100 hp, and was often fitted with stylish custom made bodies.
In the early 1920s the company found itself in financial difficulties and was finally bought by William Durant in 1922. After that it went downhill with Locomobile's prestige. Next to the expensive Model 48 more affordable assembled cars were added, like this (still very large) model with an 8 cylinder engine from engine manufacturer Lycoming.
The undignified end for Locomobile came directly after the stock market crash in 1929, which depleted the coffers of the Durant concern.
