AMG Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 W116 1979
2019 InterClassics - Maastricht (NL)

The Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 was one of the fastest luxury saloons you could buy in the 1970s. It was fitted with the V8 engine of the Mercedes 600 limousine, enlarged to a whopping 6.9 liter displacement and fed by a state of the art Bosch K-Jetronic injection system. In standard trim it offered 286 hp at a leisurely 4250 rpm and a top speed of 225 kph, all delivered in the utmost comfort thanks to its hydro-pneumatic suspension.
But the car shown here is anything but standard. The performance specialists of AMG (long before they became part of Mercedes in 1993) have done extensive work on it, tuning the luxury cruiser into a proper muscle car. In those years AMG didn't offer complete cars but a elaborate line of performance upgrades and styling tweaks from which the customer could choose, creating the car he or she preferred.
Engine performance options were organized in various stages; the first stage involved changing the cams, cylinder heads, compression and ignition. A next stage involved using cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder. Other options involved enhanced brakes and suspension. It's not quite clear what has been done to this exact car but a typical AMG upgrade of the 6.9 engine would amount to 380 hp, a top speed of 240 kph and a 0 to 100 kph acceleration in 7 seconds. Not bad for a car weighing near 2 metric tons in the 1970s. Fuel consumption is said to be a nightmare though...
