Auburn 851 Standard phaeton 1935
2019 InterClassics - Maastricht (NL)

1935 was the penultimate year for American manufacturer Auburn but also viewed as a highpoint in its history. This mainly relates to the iconic model 851 Supercharged Speedster model designed by Cord stylist Gordon Buehrig, guaranteed to do a 100 miles an hour which was spectacular performance back then. But also the more basic models in the quite expansive line-up benefited from Buehrig's styling cues, turning them into attractive, elegant and also powerful luxury cars.
There were 6 and 8-cylinder models on offer, and the 8-cylinder models came in various performance and luxury ranges (named Standard, Custom Dual-Ratio, Salon Dual-Ratio and Supercharged Dual-Ratio). The phaeton body style, essentially a sedan with drop-down top and folding windscreen, was available in all these ranges.
The car shown here is the entry-level (but by no means cheap) 8-cylinder version, powered by a 115 hp Lycoming engine. Attractive in its fancy two-tone paintjob, so typical for the era, and quite rare to find in Europe. Unfortunately all these positive aspects didn't help Auburn. Even though the sales did rise the company was still losing money. For the 1936 model year a nearly unchanged model range was offered, spelling the end for Auburn in 1937 after more than 30 years of car manufacture.
