Alfa Romeo 2300 Rio 1984
2019 Elk Merk Waardig Jubileum - Boxtel (NL)

This for Europe very unusual car was originally produced in Brazil by Fabrica National de Motores (FNM) for the local market and essentially an evolution of the venerable Alfa Romeo 2000 berlina (Tipo 102). In 1974 the 4-cylinder engine was enlarged to 2310 cc and a new body design inspired by that of the 1972 Alfetta (but 41 centimeters longer) was fitted. The model name became Alfa Romeo 2300 and production ran up to 1986.
During the 1980s local sales of this model plummeted due to the lack of an ethanol powered version and cars were stockpiled. The German Alfa Romeo importer saw an interesting business opportunity and shipped 1000 of these South American Alfas to Europe around 1981. These were marketed as Alfa Romeo 2300 Rio and about 200 were sold in the Netherlands.
Unfortunately the quality of the cars was dismal, which was not helped by being parked a long time in the salty sea breeze at a harbor awaiting shipment. To minimize reputation damage the local dealer organization offered to buy the cars back from unhappy customers. This way most Rios were scrapped or dumped somewhere in the second hand car trade.
Nowadays it's claimed that only 2 Rios remain in the Netherlands and just 7 in Europe. This one is an original Dutch registered car (about 5 years after it had been produced) which unfortunately has a ceased engine.
